If a drain has stopped completely or water is rising toward the rim, stop running water in that part of the house right now and keep everyone away from standing water that came up from a floor drain. Then call our 24/7 line at (855) 575-2890 and we will get a plumber headed your way.
Drain cleaning is the removal of a blockage from a fixture drain or branch line so water flows freely again. Most jobs use a motorized cable that cuts through grease, hair, paper or roots, and we explain what came out and what it says about the pipe.
We take drain calls at night and on weekends because a backed-up tub or sink does not keep business hours. A slow drain that can wait gets the next open daytime appointment, and we tell you what to avoid until then. Permit-required work follows the Ohio Plumbing Code, which was updated effective March 1, 2024.
Drain blocked right now: what to do first
Stop using every fixture that drains into the blocked line. Water you add today has to go somewhere, and it usually ends up on a bathroom floor or in a basement.
Skip the bottle of drain opener. Standing water full of chemical is a hazard for whoever works on the pipe next, and it can splash on skin. If water is coming up from a basement floor drain, treat it as sewage, keep children and pets away, and read our notes on sewer line cleaning because that points to the main line.
Which drain, which cause, which fix
Where the water backs up tells us a lot before the truck arrives. This is the sorting we do on the phone.
| What is happening | Where the clog likely sits | Usual fix |
|---|---|---|
| One sink or tub is slow | That fixture's trap or branch line | Cable the fixture drain |
| Kitchen sink backs up, bath is fine | Greasy kitchen branch line | Cable, then flush with hot water |
| Two or more fixtures gurgle together | Shared branch or the main line | Cable at a cleanout, then inspect |
| Floor drain or tub bubbles when the washer runs | Main line or building sewer | Machine the main line, consider a camera |
| Same drain clogs every few months | Roots, bellies or scale | Clear it, then look inside with a camera |
A camera look costs extra time, but it keeps you from paying for the same clog again.
Kitchen sink clogs: grease, food and the disposal
A kitchen sink clog is rarely just a plug at the strainer. Cooking fat cools in the pipe, coats the wall, and catches food scraps until the opening shrinks to the width of a pencil. That is why a kitchen drain often drains slowly for weeks and then stops all at once.
We cable the line past the trap, pull out the grease and food mat, and confirm the line is moving. If a garbage disposal feeds the drain, we check that the disposal itself is not jammed or leaking before we blame the pipe. Our disposal repair visit covers that side.
Scraping plates into the trash and wiping greasy pans with a paper towel prevents most repeats.
Stop running water and call. A plumber is on the line at any hour.
Cabling, snaking and hydro jetting compared
Snaking and cabling are two names for the same job. The real choice is between a cable and a high pressure water jet.
Drain cable (snake)
- A rotating steel cable with a cutting head bores through the clog.
- Suits sink, tub and shower drains, and most branch lines.
- Opens a hole through the blockage but can leave a coat of grease on the wall.
Hydro jetting
- High pressure water scours the pipe wall clean along its whole length.
- Suits heavy grease, scale and repeat clogs in a larger line.
- Needs sound pipe, so a camera look comes first when the line is old.
- A planned job in most cases. See hydro jetting for when it makes sense.
Why store-bought drain openers cause problems
Chemical openers work by generating heat or strong alkali, and the liquid sits in the pipe while it works. Old metal pipe and plastic joints can be damaged by that exposure, and a bottle that fails to clear the clog leaves a hazard for the next person who opens the trap.
Chemicals are also a concern for homes on septic. The Sidney-Shelby County Health Department permits and inspects household septic systems, so call 937-498-7249 if you are unsure what is safe to pour down a drain that leads to a tank. Tell us on the first call if your home is on septic.
When one clog really means the main sewer line
A single slow sink is a branch problem. A basement floor drain that burbles when you flush, several fixtures that gurgle together, or a tub that rises when the washer drains is pointing at the main line, and cleaning one fixture will not fix it.
Roots, a broken joint or a sag in the pipe can restrict it, and a cable run from a cleanout is the usual first step. We then tell you whether cleaning the sewer line is enough or whether a camera should look at the pipe for damage.
If the main is blocked and sewage is in the house, avoid contact with the water, keep people out of that room, and call us any hour.
Shower, tub and leaking drain lines
A shower or tub drain usually clogs with hair and soap that wrap around the strainer and build into a plug just below it. We clear the trap with a cable and check the overflow opening too.
A drain line that leaks is different from one that clogs. A damp ceiling below a bathroom, a musty smell under a sink, or water that appears only when you drain a fixture can come from a cracked or loose drain joint. We find the leak and replace the failed section.
What drives the price of a drain cleaning
We do not quote a price by phone because the cause, the access and the equipment change the job. After the plumber sees the drain, you hear a clear price before work starts.
Insurers often treat a sudden sewage backup differently from slow, long-term seepage, and some policies need a separate backup endorsement. Keep photos and ask your insurer what your policy covers.
Drains and the City's sewer system in Sidney
The City of Sidney operates a wastewater plant at 1091 Children's Home Rd, and the property owner is responsible for the building sewer out to the City's main. A clog beyond your wall is therefore yours to clear.
Sidney's City plan describes separate sanitary and storm systems, and the City's inflow and infiltration program names downspouts and sump pump connections as sources of clean water entering the sanitary sewer. If a drain backs up only after heavy rain, tell us. That pattern changes where we look.
Related work after a drain is cleared
A clog that returns usually needs more than another cable pass. We can run a camera through the line, and a planned sewer inspection shows roots, bellies or cracks. Heavy grease may point to hydro jetting as the longer fix.
We also clear drains across the area around Sidney, including homes in Piqua and nearby villages such as Anna.
Common questions
Do you handle drain cleaning emergencies at night or on weekends in Sidney?
Yes. Our line is open 24/7, including nights, weekends and holidays. If the drain is fully blocked or water is backing up into the house, we dispatch right away. A slow drain that can wait is booked into the next open daytime appointment.
Is it safe to use chemical drain cleaner before you come?
We recommend against it. Chemical left in a pipe is a hazard to the plumber and can damage older pipe, and it is a concern for septic systems. Stop using the fixture, and tell us if you have already poured something in.
What is the difference between snaking and hydro jetting?
A snake or cable cuts a hole through a clog. Hydro jetting uses high pressure water to scour the pipe wall. We typically start with a cable and move to jetting when buildup keeps coming back and the pipe is sound.
How do I know if the clog is in the main sewer line?
Several fixtures slow down at once, a basement floor drain bubbles, or a tub fills when the washer drains. Those signs point to the main line. A single slow sink is usually a branch clog.
Can you clear a clogged kitchen sink the same day?
Often, yes. Kitchen drains are among the quickest to cable, and same-day appointments are available when the schedule allows. Call and describe whether the other drains in the house are working.
My shower drain clogs every few weeks. Why?
Hair and soap build up below the strainer, and a worn pipe wall can hold onto residue. We clear the trap, check the overflow, and suggest a camera look if the problem returns often.
