A basement full of water, a pipe spraying behind a wall, a floor drain spitting up: pick the one that matches your situation, because each starts alike. Stop what you can, stay out of wet electrical areas, and ring (855) 575-2890. Somebody answers every hour of every day.
Our emergency plumber for Jackson Center works from Sidney. The village describes itself as about 15 miles of Sidney, with crews coming up SR 274 and SR 65. Typical visits involve failed sumps, split lines, sewage backups and leaking tanks.
Further down are the 2019 flood record, a triage chart, steps for the wait, and the age and water facts behind these jobs.
Water in the street, water in the basement
On 17 May 2019 the National Weather Service reported flash flooding in Jackson Center. Water covered Main Street and Pike Street, and 2 to 3 feet stood on Robb Avenue. A month later, on 18 June, high water closed SR 274.
A storm like that can push water into low basements and floor drains within minutes. A sump pump is the first line of defense inside the house, and a sewer lateral that backs up when public lines are full is the second problem. Both need a plumber, not a mop.
The village keeps its own flood damage reduction ordinances. Ask the village office at 122 E. Pike Street, 937-596-6314, before you do any work below the flood line.
Do this before the plumber arrives
Water from a pipe
Turn the main shutoff clockwise and open one faucet at the lowest level to drain what remains.
Water from outside
Do not walk into a flooded basement if the panel, furnace or outlets are in the water. Call 911 if anyone is at risk.
Sewage on the floor
Avoid contact, keep children and pets away, and do not run more water down the drains.
The dispatcher
Call (855) 575-2890 and say which of the three it is. That decides what we bring.
What we repair, ordered by how often the water comes in
Sump pumps that fail in a storm
We replace pumps and floats and test the discharge. Sump pump repair is a same-day job when parts are on the truck. Emergency dispatch is available around the clock.
Sewer backups
When a floor drain gurgles or overflows, sewer line cleaning clears the line and a camera shows why it clogged.
Broken and frozen pipes
Burst pipe repair covers split copper, cracked plastic and failed fittings.
Water heaters
A leaking tank gets a water heater replacement appointment as quickly as stock allows.
Plant and shop plumbing
Businesses in and around the village can call about commercial plumbing.
Stay safe, shut off what you can, and call. We answer at any hour.
Symptom, likely cause, and the next move
Use this when you cannot tell whether to bail water, shut a valve or wait.
| What you see | Likely cause | Do this |
|---|---|---|
| Water bubbling from a floor drain | Sewer line full or blocked | Stop using water and call |
| Basement floor wet, sump silent | Pump or float has failed | Stay dry, check the plug, call |
| Spray or steady flow from a pipe | Split pipe or failed fitting | Close the main, then call |
| Brown water after a flood | Disturbed supply or local main | Ask the village office |
This is a rough triage, not a diagnosis, and a plumber has to see the house.
How old the houses are, and why it matters
A census survey puts the median year built in Jackson Center at 1979, and about half of the 593 housing units were built before 1980. Roughly a quarter predate 1960. It is an estimate for a small village.
Houses from that period often have their first water heater replaced and shutoff valves that have not turned in decades. Test yours twice a year, because a valve that sticks during a flood becomes your biggest problem.
Four wells, no lead lines, and the tap
The village water comes from four wells in a well field at the south end of the village, between 68 and 186 feet deep. Total chlorine was about 1.3 ppm and fluoride 0.99 ppm. The village says it has no lead service lines.
Hardness is not stated, so test your tap if scale builds on fixtures. Tiger Trail Park sits on the well field grounds behind Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church off SR 65.
Getting here from Sidney
We travel up SR 274 and SR 65, and the I-75 exit for the village is Exit 102 by way of SR 274. Airstream's headquarters is in Jackson Center, and Wally Byam Memorial Park, Veterans Memorial Park and Tiger Trail Park are the usual reference points callers give.
Kettlersville, a Shelby County village with PO box ZIP 45336, is a short hop away. The same crews reach Botkins and Piqua, and building permits for Jackson Center come from the Shelby County Building Department, with plumbing permits through the Health Department.
Common questions
Do you cover every ZIP code in Jackson Center?
Jackson Center uses ZIP 45334, which also stretches into Auglaize and Logan counties. The nearby village of Kettlersville has its own PO box ZIP, 45336. We take calls for both from our Sidney base.
Is emergency service available in Jackson Center?
Yes. We answer around the clock, including nights, weekends and holidays. A burst pipe or flooded basement is dispatched from Sidney by SR 274 and SR 65, and we tell you what to do while the plumber travels.
Does Jackson Center have lead service lines?
The village says it has no lead service lines. Your own plumbing inside the house is separate, so ask if you are unsure, or test your tap if you want to confirm what is in your water.
How do I know if the sump pump has failed?
Look for a silent pump and water in the pit, or a pump that runs and never shuts off. Check the plug and the float, and if neither fixes it, call. Do not stand in standing water to test it.
Who issues permits for plumbing work in the village?
The Shelby County Building Department covers Jackson Center for building work. Plumbing permits come from the Sidney-Shelby County Health Department at 937-498-7249, so ask which office your job needs.
What if the road is closed by high water?
Tell the dispatcher your address and a second route in. High water has closed SR 274 before, and an alternate approach may be needed. Do not drive through standing water to meet us.
